Director Danny Bolye
Star: James Franco
This film is about the true story about Aron Ralston who had his arm trapped inbetween a boulder for 5 days and done all he could to survive which even meant cutting off his own arm!!!!!
In this thriller there is no threat from any human but the threat is from nature!
At the beginning of the film everything is normal average day when aron decides to go to Utah for canoneering.
His attitude empathises the audience that he is a sporty cheerful person as the viewers begin to know him.
With a simple story like this one it grips the viewer tightly and draws them in to the story.
As music starts to build up he eventually gets his arm stuck and the music helps empathises this by building up the tension gradually leading up to the scene.
Sometimes the greatest music to use to build up tension is scilence and this is used very well during the film
The detail and use of the objects he uses helps to keep him sane so he doesnt lose his mind and the camera is a sort of comfort, something to talk to so that he is not exactly alone.
When he is first trapped he tries desperatly to free himself by chipping away at the boulder with his knife tool but is no use and becomes blunter and blunter and eventually becomes no use for Aron
Through out the film it creates a hope that is suddenly dropped down so there seems like no hope for Aron. Throughout the whole film the audiences emotions are played with, when hope finally comes we feel happy for he has finally escaped a terrible fatye but then we are dropped back down into sadness and sorrow as he is still trapped in this living nightmare.
Through out the time that Aron is trapped he has flash backs which play with his mind he has flash backs of happier times with his family and friends but is brought back to the present.
The effectiveness of using close up is that we can feel how he feels, we can see that he is truley suffering and with the close ups its shows the edetail in his face of what has happened to him whiloe he has been trapped.
With one final chance to escape he does the unthinkable of cutting off his own arm. He uses his 2 inch blade to cut through skin, flesh, artiries, veins and eventually cutting the nerve and eventually cutting himself free.
