Treatment for our Thriller
Outline of idea
Preliminary task inspired us with the bullying, we also got our idea from a music video by “bullet for my valentine” “waking the demon”.
What resources will you need?
Setting: woodland/grassland, dark setting.
Actors: Chris Thomson (victim) Daniel Onslow (bully).
Props: fake blood and red contact lenses
Justification of ideas
Bullying is common in all areas and is a message to everyone that you can stand up against bullies and for yourself.
Conventions of the genre
Curious character, young, naïve protagonist, hero wins (false hero), villain antagonist.
Research into real films of the genre
American werewolf in London, teen wolf, Van Helsing.
Research into potential target audience
Aimed at 16-24 year olds, thriller- horror lovers, gore lovers, not for the faint hearted.
Proposal as to how your project would appeal to the target audience and beyond
Suspense, horror, fear, outskirt setting (forest)
Howler script
at this point the bully has punched the victim and pulls him up from the floor.
Bully: [loud and aggressive] give me your money!
Bully grabs victim round the cuff of the collar
Victim: [shocked] what…. [Scared and fearful] NO!
Bully: [Louder and faster] GIVE ME THE MONEY!
Victim: fine…here
The money is then exchange, the bully then head butts the victim who falls to the floor.
As bully walks past he spits onto the victim.
One month has past and a full moon is nigh, the bully is walking through the woods
Bully: [commanding but scared] what are you doing!
Victim: where do you think you’re going……aye?
Bully: what are you?
Victim: your worst nightmare
Howler in process
We have now recorded some of our thriller and is going really well. We have shot the bullying scene and the scene where I come out and scare Dan. So far, so good

The Preliminary Task updated
Me and Kayne have finished our preliminary filming. We had also changed the idea for the third time and this time was successful. With help Dan Onslow for telling us about his filming he had helped us greatly. The final idea was kayne walking into the classroom towards me and slaps me round the head, telling me to get off HIS computer, being a bully. Then I walk away not causing any trouble sobbing. This was the final idea and it had worked greatly.

The preliminary so far
Me and Kayne have done so recording for our preliminary but are still thinking of a clear idea for the final cut of the preliminary. WE did have the idea of Kayne walking through a door meeting me inside with someone mysterious watching on the outside, but I am unsure of this idea now as we still need to do the dialogue and story board for the preliminary.
A brief description of a Thriller Plot and devices
Devices such as suspense, red herrings and cliffhangers are extensively. A thriller is a villain driven plot, where by he presents obstacles the hero must overcome. The genre is flexible and can engage the audience through a dramatic rendering of a psychological, social and political tensions. Hitchcock's said thrillers allow the audience to put their toe in cold water of fear to see what its like.

The manchurian candidate
Director: Jonathan Demme
Stars: Denzel Washington, Leir Schneiber, Meryl Streep, Kimberly Elise.
The most recent version of the manchurian candidate is set in the gulf war to bring everything up to date and as the soldiers do a patrol they are attacked and kidnapped.
One main (the resourceful her) man major Ben Marco is trying to regain and unravel his sanity.
This film has a mix of the thriller genres:
Psychological, political and conspiracy
The threat in this film is the Communism of the global powers which threatens democracy.
The Director elaborates and makes the film bigger than life: Sadder, darker and stronger than life.
Raymond Shaw has the power but his mother is the enemy.
The modern version is very different to the original version: Drowning in the water creates a dream like setting by a remote lake. The fog represents a lack of clarity and non diegetic music builds up to build up the tension.
Simplicity in editing and close up camera shots reflects Raymond's hypnotic state.
Marco shoots Raymond and Eleanor
Under current of Greek myth, with inappropriate relationship between Raymond and Eleanor. Oedipus Rex.

Psycho 1960
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Writers: Joseph Stefano, Robert Bloch
Stars: Antony Perkins, Janet Leigh and Vera Miles
Phoenix officer worker Marion Crane runs away because she is fed up with life. She steals $40,000 and laves for fairvale and meets a man dominated by his mother.
The external threat is from a mad man with a deranged mind.
Key scenes:
The shower scene
The stairwell
The car being pushed into the bog
The early exit of Janet Leigh is very unexpected and the screenplay tricks the audience in to thinking that Marion was the main character.
There were no advanced screenings and if you had missed the first screening you would of had to book your ticket for the next showing.
There were many devices used in this film such as suspense and the red herring. The cliff hangers were used extensively through out the feature.
In the film Norman Bates determines what happens in the film, he has control over th people that enter is motel and house.

Film Noir Dead again (1991)
The lighting and colour change of the extractis very obscure and menacing. The lighting of straus' face during teh interviw is almost hidden like he has something to hide, but then he comes into the light las if to show something. With Baker the light is always on him to show hat he is tring to solve the crime, that all eyes are on him to find out if strauss killed his wife. The use of back lights shoes silhouettes to make you feel uneasy, also as strauss is walking down the hall it may feel like he is walikng towards you.
The Psychological Thriller The Mind, Conflict and the Past.
The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters preying upon one anothers minds, either by playing deceptive games with the other or by merley trying to demolish, the others mental state.
Sometimes the suspense comes from within one solitary character where characters must resolve conflicts with their own minds. Usually this conflict is an effort to understand something that has happend to them.
Good film examples of this is Spellbound and Marnie.

Hitchcocks Mcguffin
A Mcguffin is a plot device that motivates the characters and advances the story, but has little other relevance to the story.
"We have a name in the studio, and we call it the Mcguffin: It is the mechanical element that usually crops up in any story. In crook stories it is always the necklace and in spy stories it is always the papers".

Shock!
Example of Shock
Now imagine the same scene except that instead of the camera revealing the bomb underneath the table, without any warning explodes and kills all present.
Children of men
There is no tention, no suspense, its just another normal day in Picadilly Circus and then all of a sudden a bomb goes off in the cafe he just came out of. This makes the audience jump and giving them the shock of the building exploding.
Psycho
When Janet Leigh enters the shower she and the audience have no idea what is about to happen. With the discordant music adding the shock it makes it that much scarier nd "shocking when the shadowy figure comes out of nowhere an kills her in the shower, making this one of Alfred Hitchcocks best shock scenes.

Suspense
Examples of suspense
Imagine a scene in a film similar to this(classroom, students, teacher) . The camera reveals that there is a bomb under the table to the audience but we(students, teacher) are unaware of it
Sabotage
Verloc is a terrorist who is planning to plant a bomb at Picadilly Circus but because the police are after him he gets his wifes little brother to deliver the bomb.
Rope (1948)
Tells the story of two young wealthy men, Brandon and Philip, who strangle and murder a friend of theirs just to see if they can get awa with it.
Then the invite other close friends(including the murdered ans parents!) To their apartment or a dinner party, whilst hiding the body in a chest/box in their sitting room, just to see if they could get away with it.
The suspese is created through the body in the chest/box
Will the body(and the men) be bought to justice?
Do we the audience, even want his to happen.

The Birds (1963)
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Writers: Daphne du Maurier(story) Evan Hunter(Screenplay)
Stars: Rod Taylor, Tippi Hendren, Jessica Tandy
A wealthy San francisco socialite a potential boyfriend.
Birds begin to attack and become more often.
This time the external threat is nature.
Some of the important scenes in the film are:
When the birds attack at the birthday party
When the birds attack the house
When they escape in the car through the birds
The enemy are better equipped as there are more of them.
At the end of the film it ends a cliffhanger and suspense is used with the sound of silence as they drive through the birds, suspense is also used when the birds attack the cafe and again the sound of silence.
The scene where Tippi Hendren is ravaged by birds near he end of the movie took a week to shoot, attached by nylon threads so they couldn't get away.
In total there where 370 effect shots during the whole film, the final shot is a composite of 32 shots.
There is a sense of unending terror as the end doesn't end in the typical the end fashion, it ends with a cliffhanger which leaves us asking will they make it out alive.
After the premiere of The Birds Hitchcock manage to organise a further scare of putting speakers in the trees and as the audience come out the speakers played the flapping and squawking of birds which had worked.
During the film there isn't much music, a lot of silence is used as suspense which creates an uncomforting feeling for the audience.

Alfred Hitchcock The Master of Suspense
Alfred Hitchcock was the master of suspense whose films came to the benchmark for psychological.
Here are some of his famous quotes:
"The only way to get rid of my fears is to make films about them"
"There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it"
If it is a good film, the sound could go off ant the audience would still have a perfectly clear idea of what was going on".
"Always make the audience suffer as much as possible"
"I am a typical director, If i made Cinderella, the audience would immediately be looking for a body in the coach"

Alfred Hitchcock had influenced many people today:
"Under the strong influence of Alfred Hitchcock, thrillers often begin with a crime and the accusation of an innocent bystander. Were the accused to contact authorities, no doubt the case could be promptly solved but instead the poor bystander runs from the law thus further jeopardising life and limb". Rick Altman
Some more examples of Alfred Hitchcock conspiracy films are:
The 39 Steps - 1935
North by Northwest - 1959

Thriller!!!! What is it???
What is it?
"The Thriller is a very difficult genre to pin down because it covers such a wide range of films.
Thrillers are films of suspense... that are supposed to instill terror to the audience" Susan Hayward, Key concepts in film studies.

Like the villains in James Bond movies. Whenever Bond breaks into the complex,"Ah mister Bond, welcome, come in. Let me show you my entire evil plan and then put you in a death machine that doesn't work". Jerry Seinfeld
The rules of Roadrunner
- The Roadrunner cannot harm or upset the coyote, only except by going meep meep
- No outside force can harm the coyote, only his own ineptitude or the failure of acme products
- The coyote could stop anytime, if he weren't a fanatic
- The Roadrunner must stay on the road- otherwise logically he would not be a Roadrunner
- All action must be confined to the natural environment of the two characters - The Southwest American desert
- All materials, tools, weapons, or mechanical conveniences must be obtained from acme corporation
- Whenever possible, make gravity the coyotes greatest enemy.
- The coyote is always more humiliated than harmed by his failures
However, most would agree that there are certain conventions that mainstream films observe in order for them to be acceptable to the mass audience.
Thriller contentions:
- weapons
- young naive protagonist
- curious character
- resourceful
- flashback
- far more powerful in the beginning
- double agent
- false hero
- reason for conflict
- mcuffin
- hi-tech gadgets
- fast paced action scenes
- hero falls in love
- cant kill children
- mysterious phone call
- suspense
- hero wins
- villain antagonist with shady past
- mysterious enigma
