Now imagine the same scene except that instead of the camera revealing the bomb underneath the table, without any warning explodes and kills all present.

There is no tention, no suspense, its just another normal day in Picadilly Circus and then all of a sudden a bomb goes off in the cafe he just came out of. This makes the audience jump and giving them the shock of the building exploding.
Psycho
When Janet Leigh enters the shower she and the audience have no idea what is about to happen. With the discordant music adding the shock it makes it that much scarier nd "shocking when the shadowy figure comes out of nowhere an kills her in the shower, making this one of Alfred Hitchcocks best shock scenes.
